What is a ticketing system?

A ticketing system is software that lets an event organizer create events, sell tickets online and at the door, take payments and validate tickets at entry — all in one place.

In practice a ticketing system combines several jobs: creating ticket types and prices, a branded online shop, payment processing, box office sales and ticket validation by QR code. Many systems add marketing tools, reporting and settlements on top.

A good system is self-service for the organizer: you create the event, open sales and track results in real time without a separate project. Lippunet is a Finnish ticketing system where online and box office sales, payments, marketing and reporting live in one service.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between a ticketing system and a ticket marketplace?

With a ticketing system you sell under your own brand and own the customer data. A marketplace brings its own audience but keeps the customer relationship and often charges the buyer service fees.

Does a ticketing system need its own website?

Not necessarily. You can sell on a branded page provided by the system, or embed the ticket shop into your own website.
